Acrylic fluid technique / abstract painting

Fluid painting

Fluid painting or fluid painting is one of the many techniques that acrylic paints possess. It was developed for artists who wanted to use acrylic more fluidly either by painting on water or to achieve an aqueous effect in their works. This technique can be used on different support bases such as canvas, on paper or, being the most common of all, on canvas. In the same way, it can be applied in different ways such as dripping or pouring.

Acrylic paints are paints whose binder base is acrylic resins or vinyl glues, which creates an elastic and stable film. This glue sticks very well in a variety of materials. It works with water as a diluent.

It is cleaned with soap and water. It leaves no smell. Comfort at work.
Good color and quality, although this will depend on the acrylic we use, or the pigments we mix, and it is a matter of tastes, desires, and needs.
Variety of supports. A lot of ability to mix with collage and mixed media. This is thanks to the fact that the acrylic glue is used to paste elements, create textures, etc.
Oil can be painted on top as the final phase of the painting. In this case, it is better to let the acrylic dry first.

The same quick-drying can be an inconvenience, to retard it you have to use “Retarder” liquid.
It can spoil the brushes a lot if care is not taken since the paint dries quickly and the acrylic, once hardened, costs to clean.
To make transparencies, more water or a “transparentizing” liquid can be used.
To make effects, fillings/impastos and glazes you can use an “Acrylic Gel”, mix with more pigment or other materials. On this topic, you can see the entry: Materials to create textures in the pictures.
Increased risk of cracking in the painting especially if the work is exposed to sudden changes in temperature and if very little water has been added to the acrylic paint.
